SPACE Studios Summer Arts Activities at Home

Colchester’s SPACE Studios have created a fantastic suite of arts activities for you to get creative with at home. Make your own camera obscura and learn how to create basic photographic print using household objects.

The activities highlight the origins of analogue photography through the creation of camera obscura and alternative photographic printing techniques. The resources have been designed for artists looking to experiment with new methods, as well as families and children looking for creative projects to do at home.

There are activities that are suitable for all ages and levels of experience, from a basic jam jar camera obscura that you can make with the kids, to a more intricate camera obscura cardboard visor constructed from a step-by-step template.

Visit our resources page to read more and download everything you need to get started.

As part of this project, SPACE will be hosting an event in Colchester’s Castle Park next year where participants will be invited to record images through a pop up camera obscura or through ones they have made at home.
Please send an email to jack@spacestudios.org.uk to be notified when the event will be taking place.

These summer activity packs have been created by Darkroom37, a dedicated darkroom and analogue photography studio at SPACE Colchester, 37 Queen Street. The project is supported by Colchester Borough Council’s Creative Events Fund and is part of Essex 2020.
